Alberta wild fires update

The Alberta government has declared an early start to the wildfire season in the face of low snowpacks and forecasts of dry weather to come. Alberta Forestry and Parks Minister Todd Loewen said Tuesday the season is now underway — 10 days earlier than the usual start of March 1. Loewen said his department is asking for enough extra funding in the budget to hire an extra firefighters. If that request is approved, they will be in the field by May 15, he said. Loewen also said a permit is now required for any burning in the forest protection area. Fire bans are likely to follow. This season is expected to be similarly hot. The Alberta government has declared a provincial state of emergency as out-of-control wildfires force more residents from their homes. Earlier in the day, at another media briefing about wildfire conditions, Smith suggested the province was considering a state of emergency. She also described the current wildfire situation in Alberta as an "unprecedented crisis. Under the Emergency Management Act, declaring a state of emergency is a legal mechanism that provides the provincial government with a higher level of intergovernmental co-ordination by working with municipalities, organizations and businesses to support evacuated residents. This also allows around the clock monitoring of the situation, access to emergency discretionary funds, the ability to mobilize additional support. The number of Albertans forced from their homes due to out-of-control wildfires has risen overnight with three new evacuation orders declared in the past 24 hours, fire officials said Sunday afternoon. More than 19, residents have now been ordered to escape the paths of multiple wildfires across central and northern Alberta. Monday afternoon, as 90 wildfires burned across the central and northern half of the province, 15 evacuation orders remained in place, including Valleyview, which was evacuated Monday afternoon. The majority of the wildfires are under control or being held, but 23 are classified as out of control by Alberta Wildfire.
