He is Kiryu 's oath brother and the patriarch of the Nishikiyama Family. His best friend, Kiryu, often calls him by the name "Nishiki". His reasoning for joining was due to feeling indebted to Shintaro Kazama and the Yakuza for paying his ill sister's medical bills. Throughout the events of Yakuza 0, Akira was heavily against Kiryu's approach against the many trials he faced. After Kiryu was framed for murder and resigned from the Dojima Family to protect Shintaro Kazama's reputation, Akira stayed within the Yakuza. Upon Kiryu joining the Dojima Family's rival, Tachibana Real Estate, Akira, along with the others within the Family, were sent under the orders of Hiroki Awano, to hunt Kiryu down and return him to the Family, so that he can be sent to "The Hole" to suffer his punishment.

Originally a member of the Dojima Family , he goes on to become the patriarch of the Nishikiyama Family. Nishikiyama has a muscular build and loose, black shoulder length hair in Yakuza 0 , as well as the prologue and flashback sequences in Yakuza Kiwami. Nishikiyama's tattoo depicts a red koi swimming upwards and was tattooed by Utabori. The koi is red with white fins and red scales with white edges. The koi is surrounded by gray waves. His tattoo represents his ambition to climb the ranks of the Tojo Clan , as in Japanese and Chinese mythology, the Koi must swim upstream the Yellow River through the dragon's gate of Longmen to turn into a dragon. In Yakuza 0 , only his tattoo's outline is finished. In Yakuza and Yakuza Kiwami , Nishikiyama wears a double-breasted white suit, black dress shirt, white patterned necktie, and black crocodile leather oxfords. In Yakuza 0 , he wears a maroon suit with a black and gold patterned dress shirt, a necklace with a silver pendant that has a diagonal checkered pattern, a dark brown leather belt with a gold buckle, and shiny dark brown cap toe oxfords. During the prologue and flashback sequences of Yakuza and Yakuza Kiwami respectively, he wears a two button notch lapel white suit jacket with black slacks and a black dress shirt with a popped collar, instead of the double breasted peaked lapel white suit and black dress shirt with a white tie that he wears later on. While he was in school, Nishikiyama wore a black gakuran WP over a magenta t-shirt with black oxfords. As seen in Yakuza 0 , Nishikiyama started off to be very loyal and supportive towards his friends and family such as Kiryu and Kazama. He often hangs out with Kiryu, and frequently banters about his inadequate taste in fashion.

As killing your Oyabun is considered one of akira nishikiyama worst possible offenses for a yakuza, it would have been all over for him, but considering Yuko's deteriorating health, Kiryu made a snap decision and took the fall for his friend and went to jail for ten years. Nishiki establishes the Nishikiyama Family as a "subsidiary" of the Tojo Clan, and later triggers an internal power struggle for the clan's leadership shortly after Kiryu's release, leading to the two men becoming mortal enemies. Nishiki also appears as a supporting character in the prequel installment, Yakuza 0 , which follows Kiryu's early years as a low-ranking member of the Tojo Clan. For Yakuza Kiwami , the remake of the original Yakuza , Nishiki's role in the narrative is expanded, with his motivations being more clearly explained. The character of Nishiki is positively received, particularly for his expanded story arc in Kiwami and when it is contrasted with his depiction as a benevolent character in 0. Nishikiyama has a tattoo on his back of a koi , a type of Asian carp which symbolizes strength and bravery and alludes to his namesake. According to the legend, carp that swim up the Yellow River in China and leap over a legendary waterfall known as the "Dragon's Gate" are transformed into dragons.

Friends and sworn brothers, the two grew up together at the Sunflower Orphanage and joined the Dojima Family together. Blessed with cunning, wit, and the ambition to make use of them in order to climb the family ranks, he shows frustration at Kiryu's lack of drive to do the same. Behind his desire for success is his concern for the well-being of his sickly younger sister. Kiryu's closest friend, who grew up alongside him in Sunflower Orphanage. After Kiryu takes the blame for the murder of Sohei Dojima , Nishikiyama becomes a patriarch of his own family and secures the backing of the Omi Alliance to rise to power. Nishikiyama goes back to Serena to deliver the news to Reina about Kiryu and Yumi. Yakuza Villainous Breakdown : Gets two of these. At certain points in the game's narrative, the player-controlled Kiryu can partake in multiple side activities together with Nishiki, such as going to karaoke establishments, batting cages together, and shopping for new suits. When Kiryu is released from jail, he finds that Nishikiyama has not only started his own subsidiary group, but he has changed into a cold, heartless man completely unlike his former self. As an Actor Allusion , Ichiban Kasuga's tattoo is a "dragonfish" that has the potential but has yet to truly become the Dragon. Kiryu refuses, leading Awano to order a manhunt led by the entire Dojima Family, with Nishikiyama forced to join. Nishikiyama tells Kiryu to go ahead and find Makoto without him. Yumi asks Nishiki if he is truly happy with the things he's done because of his obsession, and that he has failed to confront his inner problems. He reveals his romantic feelings towards Yumi, and that he that was jealous of Kiryu because she loves him, and because Kiryu was always stronger and more popular than him. By the time of the main game however he's capable of commanding fierce loyalty from his men that continues even after his death, in part by brutally murdering Matsushige for disobeying him.

Kiwami shows the very moment when the change occurred. Nishikiyama doesn't resist and takes it, only sobbing after the beating, feeling ashamed that he betrayed the very man that gave him his family. Inconsistent Coloring : For some reason, his black hair is incorrectly colored as dark brown in some scenes in Yakuza 0. There is a consensus that the additional cutscenes in Kiwami which focus on Nishiki help add further depth to the character and build upon his role in 0 , which made Nishiki transitioning from a meek wise-guy to a bloodthirsty yakuza boss believable. When he wakes up, Nishikiyama and Yumi are nowhere to be seen. In the end, they find themselves unable to come to an understanding over just how differently their paths have diverged in the time that's passed.
