Kindly note this review is of the former Premium Economy Spaceseat which was found on select Air New Zealand aircraft. The seat is no longer in operation. I do miss these seats! I flew to and from Los Angeles with Air New Zealand; whom now happen to be one of my favourite airlines. To date I have experienced their Economy and Economy SkyCouch products, now I would like to share my experience of their Premium Economy cabin with you from the moment I boarded the aircraft in LA to the moment I arrived at the gate in London.

Living it up in Premium Economy on the way to Melbourne. I get a lot of questions about travelling as a person of size, more specifically flying while fat. One of the most common concerns seems to be about fitting in aeroplane seats, so when I flew to Melbourne last year I decided to purchase premium economy seats to see how they compared to economy seats. One thing I learned is that not all Premium Economy flights are created equal. I flew with Air New Zealand on my flights to and from Melbourne, but my experiences were very very different. Your bid may or may not be accepted, which means you might either have to be content with Economy class, or score an upgrade which could be a cheaper option, depending on how much your bid was. I was using crutches I was travelling while recovering from a dislocated kneecap and found the aisle itself quite narrow in terms of leg room — something to be aware of if you need assistance walking. I was sitting in the middle aisle which would be great for couples as the seats have no real divider between them and had plenty of seat space due to the open layout of the seat, but I did need to ask for a seatbelt extender. The tray table folded out from the seat in front of me and I was left with plenty of room to sit comfortably. There was a great selection of entertainment and headphones available, and there was a USB port where I could charge my phone.
In Auckland, we only had about 30 minutes to visit the Koru Lounge before boarding our flight to San Francisco.
As I'm a huge fan of the Air New Zealand Premium Economy Spaceseat I wanted to experience what I thought could have been my final flight in one as the Spaceseat is now being replaced as part of the ER fleet refubishment that began in February. The Spaceseat configuration is a configuration. Middle seats and outer seats are both different, with the inner seats aimed at couples traveling together, and the other seats for individuals. I much prefer the inner seats due to the centre armrest that can be lifted up meaning I sleep incredibly well. Unlike some airlines who simply pitch Premium Economy as marginally enhanced Economy offering, Air New Zealand's offering is far closer to Business than Economy. The Spaceseat is either loved or hated, and this has no doubt played a part in Air New Zealand deciding to replace it with a more conventional business class style recliner seat during the refit - I'm sure the fact they're going to fit 10 more seats into the same cabin has nothing to do with the decision making process!
Fifth-freedom routes -- routes operated by an airline between two foreign countries as a part of services connecting the airline's own country -- mean you can fly some airlines on unexpected routes. I was waiting for award availability to open up for another review flight as well as my passport to be returned after a visa application , so we ended up not booking this flight until two days before departure. Related: 3 reasons to fly premium economy and 1 reason not to. Or you can try to book an award. But doing so can be difficult, since premium economy awards are only bookable with some loyalty programs. But be sure to check availability before transferring. Related: A guide to earning transferable points. I was originally assigned a middle seat, and there were no other seats available. I changed my seat to 26D, an aisle seat in the middle section. I tried to check in online, but the process repeatedly failed.

Travelling to New Zealand is no picnic for us Europeans. For us, the country is at the end of the world and so even the fastest flight connection takes around 24 hours. It is all the more important on such a long journey not to arrive at your destination completely exhausted. Two long-haul flights with the flag carrier of the Kiwis were also part of the small round-the-world trip. Here are a few glimpses of their in-flight product. The focus point is the longest flight of the trip — with a flight time of around 14 hours from Auckland to Chicago.

Was there an unexpected upgrade? Impressions of the international Air New Zealand lounge in Auckland The moment when we were asked to go to the service desk in the lounge over the loudspeaker was a bit irritating. After receiving our new boarding passes, we entered the Koru Lounge, which was much larger that we expected it to be. Search for: Search. So nobody had to get off the plane hungry, especially if they had just had the hot dog beforehand. But first the flight data of this segment:. Air New Zealand Toggle child menu Expand. The journey across the Atlantic was a little bit bumpy at times, but the Captain did a great job to minimise the turbulence wherever possible and the seat belt sign was only on for a couple of hours in the night. Each Spaceseat features a very responsive Even better, the Air New Zealand flight attendants kept the lavs neat throughout the entire flight, which was something I certainly wasn't accustomed to seeing. Each passenger can type in their wishes directly on the entertainment screen, and the crew then sees all the messages in their interface.

Stretch out and relax in Premium Economy. There is a beanbag "footrest" on the floor in front of each seat. Thumbs up The large seat spacing also allows the installation of a spacious leg rest, not only on the bulkhead but on each seat. I found the aisle a little wider on this plane, and once again when I sat down in the window seat of the left aisle , I had loads of leg room. Upon stepping aboard the aircraft I received a very warm welcome from the flight attendants whom greeted me with a warm and friendly "Kia Ora" as they checked my boarding pass before directing me towards the Premium Economy cabin and my allocated seat. In spite of this, it is still easy to converse with your traveling partner. It was the first airline meal I have enjoyed in years. The Premium Economy cabin is located in the middle of the aircraft just forward from the wings and has a maximum capacity of 44 passengers. You are then offered a choice of granola or museli-type cereal and tea, coffee, fruit juice or water. The parsnip mash was something different bit a nice change to see on an airline as opposed to mashed potato, which funnily enough I loathe. This is not least due to the unrivalled large seat pitch. As usual queues at immigration at Los Angeles were a nightmare with it taking around 75 minutes to clear immigration, and around 90 minutes in total from leaving the plane until stepping outside for the hotel shuttle. Available when travelling long haul, Perth and Hawaii.
