In an effort not to drip feed, this may become an essay. Apologies in advance. My brother and I have a poor relationship, and have done for many years. We have little in common, and to be honest I don't like him. I don't think he likes me much either. Examples would include lying, stealing and causing endless worry. When my father was in hospital admittedly nearly 10 years ago , seriously unwell he refused to visit as he "doesn't like hospital".

Well, there are lots of things, but this thing in particular is really making me steam: the use of the acronym AIBU. AIBU is everywhere — permeating social media, clogging up my inbox in the subject line of blog posts and Mumsnet Daily updates and basically driving me insane. At the risk of alienating my entire readership, I blame the early Mumsnetters with their DSs and DDs darling sons and darling daughters. Slowly but surely two letter acronyms have become three, four and even five letters, to the point that you spend your whole time googling what they mean in order to understand what on earth someone is talking about. I realise being as concise as possible is the name of the game, particularly when you only have characters or less in order to say what you want to say, but is this really what the world is coming to? Unless someone is dead or dying. It serves him right. You see the theme. Try NowLoan. Hate acronyms with a passion drive me mad. I have to resort to google too to work out what they mean. Thank you on behalf of all acronym haters. Just realised I do TY will stop now! Acronyms wind me up, I am always googling what they are! Thanks for clearing that up!

Which is rare.

AIBU — am I being unreasonable? The acronym is attributed most to parenting website Mumsnet, where members can post and debate whether their choices, intentions and feelings are justified — or are unreasonable. The topics covered vary from friends to family to work, but notably to relationships too. You can break this down by reflecting on: how defensive your partner is being, whether this is a recurring pattern, whether this impinges on a core value of yours, and if you feel unheard. Determining where to draw the line though is tough because inevitably, our past experiences do affect the way we approach the present — particularly if there are unhealed wounds. If reasonability is determined by personal judgement, it might a good idea to define that better as a couple. Knowing your boundaries is a good first step to recognising whether a demand, concern or enquiry is unreasonable. And in writing those posts to begin with, something inside is probably telling them that too. Get in touch by emailing MetroLifestyleTeam Metro.

When we launched the Mumsnet Talk forums back in early , they initially consisted entirely of me asking myself questions and then after quickly swapping names answering myself. Thankfully, before too long — and before I ran out of made-up medical problems, annoying children and increasingly desperate recipe suggestions — they sprang magically to life and started featuring real conversations. Nearly 20 years on, our AIBU? Is it unreasonable, for instance, to expect your husband to wear underpants? Is it unreasonable to quit your job in shame after experiencing horrendous in-work diarrhoea?
