Hotel is the subtitle for the fifth season of American Horror Story. The fifth miniseries premiered on October 7, and ran for twelve episodes. In ahs 5, Hotel was also nominated for eight Emmy Awards, winning two. The season's story is set in the Hotel Cortezan enigmatic, six-storey, ahs 5, art-deco hotel based in Los Angeles.

American Horror Story season 5 tells the dark story of the Hotel Cortez, a place in Los Angeles that is haunted by ghosts and vampires. Many remember it as the season that features Lady Gaga as Countess Elizabeth, a creepy and well-crafted character who stands out among the many villains in the popular franchise. When compared to other seasons about a circus, a house full of ghosts, or a serial killer at a summer camp, season 5 might be even bleaker. The main characters are all power-hungry and watching them interact with each other is as entertaining as it is scary. While every episode is fairly dark, the ending wraps up every major character's storyline while suggesting that there is more terror to come.

Her role was replaced instead with pop superstar Lady Gaga, who lent her talents to the ensemble cast as the mysterious Countess. Fans initially had mixed reviews about Hotel , since its opulence and glamour was a shift from the previous seasons' gritty, dark aesthetic or campy horror-comedy attitude. Now, it has seen a resurgence in popularity, though many new fans checked into the hotel for Gaga alone. Hotel may have not had the strongest overall plot, but the historical aspects were incredibly well-developed and the supremely talented cast gave many a standout performance, immersing themselves in roles that were inspired by very prominent figures. The Hotel Cortez in American Horror Story is haunted by many spirits of past guests who have stayed in the hotel and either overdosed, committed suicide, been turned into vampires, or have met some other fate that keeps their souls trapped there forever. Some of the staff are human and serve more as caretakers for both the restless spirits and other permanent guests as well as play the role of the hotel's face, interacting with new guests and keeping them unaware of the dangerous that lurk within the halls. The real life inspiration for the Cortez is one of Los Angeles ' most notorious haunted hotels where many real people have met a gruesome end, The Cecil Hotel. The first documented suicide at the Cecil was W. Norton, a hotel guest in who died after taking poison in his room. There were many of these deaths that continued on the premises between the s and s, so much so that local residents started calling the hotel "The Suicide".
