Every summer, every league in the country has some sort of preseason media gathering, the Atlantic Coast Conference included. Those events always go the same way: Coaches downplay expectations, quarterbacks praise their offensive line and receivers, and savvy reporters leave with a notebook filled with ideas for the season. And in the Coastal, such an exercise has been utterly futile, useless and often completely wrong. In the last 10 seasons of ACC divisional play, voters predicted the Coastal winner right exactly twice. His team was picked third in the preseason poll, with 18 out of a possible votes.

The Atlantic Coast Conference football champions includes 11 distinct teams that have won the college football championship awarded by the Atlantic Coast Conference ACC since its creation in Sixteen teams have competed in the conference since that year. It returned to Florida in when it was held at Camping World Stadium in Orlando , but moved back to Charlotte in where the championship game is slated to remain through Maryland later went on to be crowned national champions before losing the Orange Bowl. On December 4, , conference officials convened in Greensboro, North Carolina , and admitted the University of Virginia as the eighth member of the conference. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January and had operated as an independent before joining the ACC. Miami and Virginia Tech began official ACC play with the season , [14] but because the league was forbidden from hosting a championship game, the conference was forced to award a championship based on regular-season play round-robin scheduling was no longer used beginning that season. Generally, the ACC's top athletes and teams in any particular sport in a given year are considered to be among the top collegiate competitors in the nation. The ACC was founded on May 8, , by seven universities located in the South Atlantic States , with the University of Virginia joining in early December to bring the membership to eight.
