As such, Keith had yet to complete the Volvo when he conjured up the idea of the Datsun build in his head. Once the Volvo was finished, and of course, thoroughly enjoyed, he made the moves to sell it, which secured the funds for the Datsun at hand. Despite its shortcomings, the car drove well — astoundingly so — and after a short test drive, Keith made the purchase, and drove the car home in confidence, knowing the purchase was well-made. The cool October night was a catalyst for an instant love-connection with the Japanese coupe, and with his plans in order, he wasted no time disassembling the car as soon it made its way into the garage. While the car was getting the complete treatment at the bodyshop, the aftermarket parts began to pile up back at home. Because the factory L28E 6-cylinder engine ran so well, the desire for an engine swap dissolved rapidly, and any thought of pursuing performance was quickly dissuaded by the thought of unreliability. The Nissan Z model is widely known for its great performance abilities throughout the generations. The chassis started in as the popular Datsun, or Fairlady Z, and is still being produced today, as we currently wait on the Z. Although the ZX retained a similar shape as its favorable predecessor, the second generation of Zs produced weren't necessarily the "best. The previous generation featured a sporty look, that handled just as well as it looked. The newer ZX featured a luxurious interior and softer springs, insinuating it was geared for comfort. Due to the S30 first generation Z's amazing styling , it was heavily preferred among enthusiasts, even though the later ZX models were more aerodynamic. Courtesy of its new shape, the Nissan ZX had better stability during high speeds and better fuel economy, which were common issues on the first-generation Z's. Regardless of what it was called, they all contributed to "Z" history.

After a lot of pulling, bashing, cutting and welding, in March the Datsun was finally straight, smooth and ready for paint. Gary stuck with white, and not being too glossy the finish is in keeping with how the car would have emerged from the factory. The crashed R34 also donated its seats for the build, and Gary tells me these will eventually be custom trimmed.
