The film had its world premiere on September 5, , in the main competition section of the 75th Venice International Film Festival. On July 22, , Anders Behring Breivik dresses in a police uniform, loads a van with home-made explosives, and drives to Regjeringskvartalet , the executive government quarter in Oslo , Norway. He leaves the van outside the office of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. Moments later, it explodes, causing several casualties. When they learn of the bombing, one student, Viljar Hanssen, calls his parents to make sure they are unhurt. Breivik arrives at the ferry landing and informs staff that he is a police officer, sent to secure the island following the attack in Oslo. The camp director transports him to the island by boat. Breivik instructs the staff to gather the children in one location. When the head of security asks for ID, Breivik shoots him and the director dead. The children flee as Breivik opens fire, murdering dozens. Viljar and his brother Torje hide on a rocky embankment on the beach. Viljar calls his mother to tell her a shooting is in progress.

No problems with the dialogue did I notice during the film. Most of them were shot in the head or in the face at close range. The attack itself took hours, but yet it feels like minutes. The way this movie is cut, it felt like the trial started one week after the attack on the island. The movie combines his story with the stories of the victims and one victim - Viljar and his family - in particular and focuses mostly on Brieivik's trial for the crime. I live 30mins from the island and remember this day as if it was yesterday. Worth your time if you think you can handle it. The grief of the families and the survivors is given a bit more attention in this movie and there are some very moving scenes. I'm not saying the movie should have been 5 hours long to depict all of this more accurately, but at least make it clear how much time is spent between the scenes. The choice of having the actors speak English seemed a little odd at first, but I am glad that was the way it was chosen since reading subtitles would have taken focus away from the excellent performances that were display especially by the lead survivor actor.
