Intensely bleak, it is a nightmare scenario to imagine, sadly though after the last few years, it almost feels like a prophecy, with people's freedoms and civil liberties being diminished. I'm not a cynic, but I see glimpses of the novel in day to day life.

Longing for freedom, the lowly bureaucrat of the Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith, summons up the courage to write down his unspoken desires in his little secret diary. Serving silently at the pleasure of the grim, autocratic hyper-state of Oceania, Smith knows that the English Socialist Party's supreme leader, the omnipotent Big Brother, watches his every move, condemning the already terrified people into a life of slavery. Under those dire circumstances--as the totalitarian government's suffocating stranglehold tightens more and more--Julia, another equally seditious party member, crosses paths with Winston, and a dangerous clandestine affair begins.

Micheal Radford directs with subtlety around the greasy sets and crumbling locations the picture was filmed in and around the very area in which Orwell set his novel. This film is one of my favorite sci-fi films of all time but also it's one of the saddest films of all time, because it's one of those rare dystopian stories where for once the protagonist doesn't have home court advantage. They had finally found their own identities through loving each other. Screenwriter Jonathan Gems has a done a terrific job with the script. How long is ? Storyline Edit. New Customer? Neither is the version as faithful to the book; some of the material is softened, and there are odd, unexplainable alterations: O'Brien becomes O'Connor, and I don't think that Goldstein, the possibly imaginary leader of the possibly fictitious "Resistance", is even mentioned.
