The associations representing Crowns, court staff and legal aid-funded lawyers known as duty counsel have also repeatedly voiced concerns that requiring people to travel from across the city to attend court downtown is a barrier to access to justice, and that one centralized courthouse is unnecessary. Described as the largest courthouse in Ontario and the second largest in Canada, Downey opened the new building alongside outgoing Ontario Court Chief Justice Lise Maisonneuve and other dignitaries.
