The sense of being cheated by fate is one I suspect most earthlings can relate to, especially as we grieve the loss of loved ones amidst these uncertain days. Her characters dared to break their silence over issues that would normally be deemed taboo, while challenging societal perceptions with every twist of the plot. She is Grandma Wong Tsai Chin , an year-old widow so enamored with smoking that her presence is first announced by the lit end of her cigarette. After spending over half of her life working tirelessly only to be left with no financial means of keeping her cherished apartment, she decides to take her fate quite literally into her own hands, all the while being spurred by the delusional certainty that she has luck on her side, just as the Blues Brothers were convinced that their spree of vehicular carnage was justified by a mission from God. Yet the instincts for comedy Sealy built as a member of the sketch comedy troupe The Fifth Humour serve her well in other areas, particularly during the quietly tense moments when Wong must rely on her inherent craftiness, such as a gift for haggling, to steer her away from danger.

Home » Movies. What struck me first about Lucky Grandma is that it is a rare film: American, yet nearly all the dialogue is in Mandarin. After Crazy Rich Asians , Searching and The Farewell , here is another welcome title that presents an aspect of Asian American life, and both she and her environment felt utterly real to me. This Grandma — like many, perhaps — is holding on to her independence for as long as she bloody well can. Her late husband left her with nothing, and she spends nothing, just maintains her health, her traditions, and her home, though her son wishes for her to leave the city and move in with his family. On the bus home, she chances upon a bag of money to replace that fallen luck… and thus finds herself caught between two criminal gangs. This goes especially for Chin herself, who is both expressive and believable in every scene; and of course, for the contrast she provides. The first feature film from director Sasie Sealy who also wrote it with Angela Cheng , Lucky Grandma is ostensibly a Chinese gangster flick, but with an elderly, assertive, cigarette-smoking woman in its center. This adventure with both destiny and the urban underworld gives Grandma the character arc which forms the backbone of the story: it puts both her luck and her independence to their ultimate test. If Lucky Grandma is a comedy, it is a slightly melancholy sort, but it works, as this tone definitely gives the characters some richness, even though we know little about their background.
