Wolin is an island at the mouth of the river Oder. Sagas tell of a magnificent fortress with an artificial harbour which could hold ships. This is a reconstruction of the fort, 3km from Warsaw. The wooden buildings and palisades have been interpreted and, at weekends in the summer, the fort is populated with living history demonstrators. By , Wolin had grown from a simple fishing settlement into a waterside town with wooden houses and streets which were surrounded by a semi-circular rampart. Excavation has shown this to be true of this cosmopolitan city in which the Viking influence is clearly visible. The wooden structures survived extremely well and could be dated using dendrochronology.

Jomsborg

Jomsborg was a semi-legendary Viking stronghold whose inhabitants were known as Jomsvikings, purportedly an order of Viking mercenaries that appears in some of the Icelandic sagas from the 12th and 13th centuries. According to the Knytlingasaga and Fagrskinna sagas, Jomsborg was built by the Danish king, Harold Bluetooth during the s, while the Heimskringla saga, describes how Jomsborg was destroyed in by Dano-Norwegian king Magnus the Good. Nazi archaeologists searched for evidence of Viking remains until the outbreak of WW2, hoping to find proof of what they believed would support their fantasy of the superiority of the Nordic race and its dominance over local Slavic peoples. According to Dr Filipowiak, the ramparts indicate the location of the Jomsborg stronghold, which is supported with the discovery of a wooden pier that would have served a trading post during the Viking era. The findings are yet inconclusive, but the locality to Wolin and the supporting evidence does suggest a possible fortified settlement. Hopefully, I can help end it. The Jomsvikings of saga tradition were an elite band of mercenary warriors who fought for the king of Wendland, and later, for Danish kings. According to the Saga of the Jomsvikings , when not fighting and plundering abroad, the Jomsvikings stayed in their stronghold. Presumably they mostly spent their time with their fellow warriors, given that women were not allowed in the fortress.
