I love my job and am passionate about the value of visual arts in a child's education. After creating my own visual arts lessons over many years, I decided I would like to take on the challenge of creating a web page to share my lessons and my simple step by step teaching method with my teaching peers. The first thing to remember is that oil pastels are not crayons. They are very different in what they are made of and how they are used. Oil pastels use oil and wax to hold them together. This creates the soft, creamy texture of an oil pastel and enables them to be coloured and blended. Crayons use wax to hold them together which makes them much harder and a little more difficult to use. You need to practise these skills if you are going to be great at using oil pastels.

This is a great basic lesson to practise your oil pastel skills of blending and outlining. Free Lesson — Cactus. Beginner Level. Easy Peasy Tips: Make sure you hold your oil pastel using a key grip. Make sure you press hard and use short strokes. Big strokes introduce white spaces in your work. Oil pastels look great if you can blend more than one similar colour together in a shape. For example dark and light green or red and orange. You may need to demonstrate how to measure using finger spaces with your class.
